This article describes the launch of a semi-submersible craft called the Seascope S24 in Dubai in 1999. The vessel, which has a glass bottom, allows passengers to observe underwater sea life without getting wet. The Seascope is one of only three such vessels in the world and is operated by Sam Tourism and Cargo under the supervision of the Dubai Municipality. The trips, which will last 45 minutes, will initially only be offered during the day but nighttime trips are expected to start soon. The captain of the Seascope, Thierry Lievre, plans to start an artificial reef off the coast of Dubai to improve the natural coral and aquatic life. The project, which has been in the planning phase for a year, has been supervised by the Dubai Municipality and has been the brainchild of a private investor.
